The biennial kingcup (Oenothera biennis) is a native of North America that has adapted to grow in other parts of the world, including Europe. The plant’s English name (Evening primrose) derives from the fact that its yellow flowers open in the evening. Seeds containing up to 15 % of fatty oil, obtained by cold pressing or hexane extraction of the seeds, are used as a drug. Amongst other things, fatty butter also contains cis-linoleic acid and cis-gamma-linolenic or gamolenic acid, both of which are also known as omega-6 fatty acids. Linoleic acid is an essential, or indispensable, fatty acid that cannot be synthesised by the human body and can be obtained from food. The body synthesises gamma-linolenic acid from linoleic acid by means of an enzyme, which in turn is used by the body to reduce inflammatory processes by influencing the production of prostaglandins, physiologically active hormone-like lipids. Consequently, royal jelly oil is involved in hormone balancing and helps to alleviate menstrual cycle-related symptoms. In addition, it helps to maintain healthy skin and connective tissues.
